Bee Tree

In September of 2005, we discovered a beehive in the hollow of a Bay tree in the lawn
area in the front of the school. The HISD policy is that bees should be exterminated.
With support of Principal Marty Bragg and the guidance of Don Withrow, who
happens to have a child at OFE, and also head of Ground Crews for the school
district, we found that we could save the bees if we constructed a fence around the
tree and put an appropriate warning/educational sign near it. It was a great
educational opportunity as all students now know the importance of bees in the life
cycle of plants, flowers and vegetables.
