We grow minds, plants and critters!
Education is in full bloom at Oak Forest!
Latest news from the Growers'...............

The next few weeks will be busy ones for all of us.  Parties, shopping, presents, visits with relatives and
friends are important elements of the season.  Let’s be sure to make time for learning and studying, too.

In the Fifth Grade Garden:
Three 5th grade classes harvested vegetables the week before Thanksgiving.  While garden pests had
ruined some of the sweet potatoes, several bushels were harvested.  It was hard work, but the potato
crew was up to the task.  Several classes also enjoyed bananas from the “tree” in the garden.  Actually
bananas do not grow on a tree; the banana is a member of the herb family.  Wow! Some big herb!  We
continue to plant and harvest radishes and lettuce.  The lemons are finally ripe.  Unfortunately unknown
parties picked most long before they were ripe.  We continue to harvest lots of herbs, peppers, and
some tomatoes.  Soon sugar snap peas will be ready.

Nature Club:
We all really appreciate the students who work so hard in Nature Club.  Without all their efforts Oak
Forest would not be the same.  Feeding all the birds and critters everyday is only one of their many jobs.
Holiday Tree: This tree will grow really fast the next couple weeks and will be a full-blown Holiday Tree
before the Holiday break.  If you have green aluminum cans that you can bring to school, please do it in
the next few days.  Wash them and place them in the special box inside the front door.  Parents if you
have time to help “grow” this tree in the next few weeks, please give us a hand.  It is labor intensive and
will require some adult supervision and help.  Call Vivian if you can help with this exciting project.
Please recycle: Don’t forget to place all recyclable items in the proper bins at school.  After lunch or a
snack, don’t toss it; recycle it, so it can be reused. Never put an aluminum can in the trash. That wastes
as much energy as if you filled that can half full of gasoline and poured it on the ground.

Score Card on Recycling Grass, Pine Needles and Leaves:
Last year 800 bags.  Goal this year 1000 bags.  So far this year, 472 bags.
With all the wind and rain this past week, leaves and pine needles are everywhere.  Bring them to school
and drop them along the split rail fence next to the teachers’ parking lot.  Every bag helps!

Please Help Oak Forest Become as Green as We can Be!

Who are the Growers?
The Growers of Oak Forest are a group of parents, educators, and community members that have been
meeting since 2003 to enhance the curriculum for the students with a "hands-on" approach primarily
through the use of Outdoor Programs. While science was the initial focus, now, all teachers are
encouraged to use these facilities for all subjects.
Use of "hands-on" experiences like these help with student discipline, organizational skills,
responsibility, and facts that they need to know to pass the TAKS test later on in the year.

Watch us grow as we improve additional areas around the campus at Oak Forest. Better yet, join us in
this mission, as we encourage parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and community members to
volunteer!

You don't have to be an experience Gardner! All you need is a desire to help enhance our student
curriculum by planning, construction, planting or maintenance in any of our Outdoor Classrooms!
